I've been working on putting together some of our fundraising efforts over the past couple of days for our Light the Night Walk. Chelsea is the HONORED HERO this year - we're so proud of her, we think she makes quite the spokesperson! All of the fundraising keeps my mind off of the d-day (diagnosis day) anniversary. There have been many memories running through my head lately, but every time I talk about them Ryan tells me to stop - he doesn't want to think about those days.

So in honor of our survivor I want to share with you what I've been working on. We're working on finishing up our t-shirt design - this picture is a draft, the wording will be slightly different, but you get the idea. I think they turned out fantastic! Here is the letter I will be sending to friends and family as a lot of our peeps don't read the blog (not that I know of anyways!)

Dear Friends & Family,

This October we will walk in honor of our beautiful daughter, Chelsea. Chelsea, the honored hero for the Light the Night walk, is a survivor. Two years ago, to the day, we were preparing our daughter for her first round of chemotherapy to treat Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Who would have ever guessed that our baby girl would be diagnosed with a life threatening illness at one year old? There was no planning for it – but life is what it is and we prepared for the fight of a lifetime.

Chelsea was weak from the illness in the beginning but quickly regained strength once the chemo began working and killing the cancer. After only a week of treatment, her infectious smile and buoyant personality were back. She charmed nurses and doctors, greeted new patients, and comforted friends fighting alongside her. Regardless of the outcome she was going to continue living, laughing and loving every single day. If only we could all learn from little miss Chelsea.

We all know how the story ends for Chelsea. It’s nearly impossible for strangers to believe she was once so sick when they see her long golden hair, the bounce in her step and that sparkle in her eye. These days she is by far the healthiest member of our family. Unfortunately there are far too many people who do not have a happy ending like ours.

There will be an estimated 21,870 deaths in the United States this year due to leukemia. Chelsea survived. There is no way for us ever to repay the many people who aided in her recovery – but we can step up in search for a cure. Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Tomorrow it could be your neighbor, your best friend, or your child. Please consider a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of our personal hero, Chelsea Faye.
