We have the diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. There are subtypes of this leukemia though and we still don't have those results though. Knowing it is AML already though allows us to get started on our treatment. Here's what we know so far:
1. She has AML and will need chemo therapy treatment.
2. This afternoon they will be inserting a central line into a major vein on her chest. This will allow them access for IV fluids, meds and of course to receive her chemo.
3. While she's sedated for the central line they will do a spinal tap and test her spinal fluid. This will tell them how far the cancer has spread. They will then give her the first dose of chemo in her spine. Even if there's no cancer in her spinal fluid, this chemo will hopefully prevent the current cancer from spreading into her spinal fluid.
4. They hope to give her the first chemo treatment through her central line today or tomorrow. We have to make a decision on whether or not we want to participate in a study. The study is for children with AML and Ds. They are hoping to find a more effective treatment with less toxicity.

I'm glad you have the best dr for this dx!! If nothing else so far, that's something positive to focus on. Now I'll be praying for the first chemo and spinal tap.

I found your site from another friend. I know Kennedy Garcia and my son, Ethan, is in remission from ALL. We finished treatment Sept. 2006 after almost 3 years. Your Chelsea is beautiful, as is your son. You have my prayers.
